Why is Warming Up Important for Dancers?

After spending all of Term Three learning dance online with us, it might be tempting to rush into class and try out all the exciting tricks and movements you’ve been waiting to do, first thing when you get back.

But the reality is, your body might not be warm enough to execute difficult movements, if you haven’t taken the time to ease your muscles and joints into it.

Warming our bodies up properly takes more than just a quick stretch. You need to ensure you are getting blood pumping through your body to warm up the muscles and then taking the time to stretch them out.

It’s vital for a dancer’s routine, and here’s why:

  • Prevents injury – warming up can help to prevent over-stretching muscles and overuse injuries
  • Builds strength – we need both flexibility and strength to ensure we can execute technical movements safely and warming up exercises like burpees, jumps and more assist with this
  • Builds flexibility – stretching out the muscles before dancing helps to ensure that they are more elastic and bendable which also prevents injury, as well as helps your movements look effortless

Especially after missing out on the in-studio experience of dance classes, warming up efficiently and taking small steps to reconnect with strength and flexibility is important to be thinking about as we get back into face-to-face classes.

We are all so excited to be back in the studio, and we want to make sure everyone has a safe transition back, so as well as warming up properly, don’t forget to check up on our covid safety rules. If you need any more information, don’t hesitate to contact us.
