What Can I Do To Assist My Child Struggling To Settle In Class?

Having trust in your child’s teachers works wonders, but we understand that for some parents, it’s easier said than done. So what is something you can do outside of the classroom to help with this process?

#1. Before Class Preparation: Warm up your preschooler to the idea of dance class by setting expectations early. Talk about when you are going, what they can expect, the nice teachers and friends they will meet. Preparation is key!

#2. Arriving Early: We can not stress enough how important it is to try your best to get to the studio at an appropriate time. Showing up when class has already started can be very detrimental to your child’s progress. Heading into a room with music playing and everyone already warmed up can be quite intimidating for your child and also may disrupt their routine and progress. Allow your child in the first few lessons to come earlier, seek their surroundings, talk with their teachers and overall feel more comfortable.

#3. Taking A Step Back: As much as we know parents are very protective of their children at this age, clinging to their side and trying to stay in the room every week is not encouraged. Not only does this distract the other students, but it can also create a wall between your child and their teachers. By leaving the room you are showing your little one that you have trust in the teachers. Crying, freezing in their spot or running for the door is expected at first. Here at Dance Factor, we fortunately have CCTV so you can take a seat and watch your child without them seeing you. We understand how important it is for you to be able to watch your child’s progress.

#4. Debriefing After Class: Discuss their experience in a positive way, what were their favourite parts of class? What are they excited for next week in class? See if they can teach YOU something they have learned in class.

Your child will gain confidence in their ability to make choices, learn new things, form ideas on their own and then proudly share them. As you witness these developments, enjoy!
