Tips for New Dancers in 2022
If you are a new dancer, use this blog post to guide you in getting the most out of your dance classes this new year!
After lockdowns which meant we needed to stay at home last year, many of us are keener than ever to achieve new goals. At dance, we may choose focus our goals on gaining more skills, improving our strength and flexibility, or even just making friends.
Here are our tips for getting the most out of your dance classes:
- Master the basics first.
- When we are beginners, we are often so excited to learn that we want to skip to the hard tricks. Remember we need to learn the basics first, in order to safely and efficiently execute our movements. This means whenever we are stretching and practising our technical steps in class, we need to focus on working especially hard.
- Think about what inspires you.
- This could be your favourite dancer on Instagram, a character from a movie or a musical, one of your friends, or so many more. Write it down so that you can remember what inspired you to start dancing in the first place, for those times we start feeling fatigued as the year goes on.
- Learn to work with your body.
- Everyone is different, and while we can be inspired by others, the best thing we can do as dancers is embrace our bodies for the way they are. We all have different strengths and weaknesses, and the more we get to know our bodies, the more we can work with these to improve them. In your classes, where possible, try to take movements and make them your own, thinking about your strengths and using them.
