Three Stretching Mistakes to Avoid
Have you been thinking about stretching more at home to uplevel your dancing?
Stretching at home can be a great way to increase mobility for dancers but must be completed safely to avoid overstretching and injury.
Here are three common mistakes to avoid:
- Not warming up enough. You need to do more than just a few star jumps before you try to stretch your muscles out. Spend time building up your heart rate and raising your core body temperature before beginning to stretch.
- Bouncing within stretches. Ballistic or bouncing stretches can be intense on the body, especially for beginners. It can be easy to injure yourself or overstretch using this method so we generally suggest using the dynamic stretching method instead. Read more about it here.
- Holding in your breath. Breathing through stretches can make them far more effective. Holding in your breath limits blood flow, causing muscles to be tense and resistant. Breathing deeply helps your muscles to relax.
