Preparing Body and Mind for Rehearsals and Performances

Both dance rehearsals and performing are mentally and physically demanding. It takes a lot of work to put together the final show for the year from all involved, and teachers need students to stay focused and alert not only while rehearsing and performing but also while waiting backstage for their turn.

It takes a lot of behind-the-scenes teamwork from every performer in the show to ensure that it runs smoothly. For example, dancers help to make sure their classmates with quick changes are changed into the correct costume in time, or dancers need to split themselves into groups to ensure they are all standing on the correct side of the stage before they enter to dance – and so many more.

As you can imagine, dancers and teachers need to ensure they have prepared their bodies and minds for the best possible outcome on the days of rehearsals. Steps you can take to ensure you or your dancer is ready to tackle the big days are:

  • Rehearsing dances beforehand – coming to the rehearsal prepared makes a huge difference in dancers feeling confident in their abilities. Even if you know your dances well, it’s still good to quickly run over them.
  • Warming up the body and getting the blood flowing – it’s always best not to arrive cold, so warm up before you come to rehearsal or come five minutes early.
  • Practice with a friend – think of anything you don’t feel 100% confident on.
  • Take time to rest and have a good breakfast in the morning before to give you lots of energy throughout the day.
  • Reflect on rehearsals afterwards – write down any key things you need to practice or remember for the big performance.
