How to Create Longer Lines as a Dancer

Great dancers know that creating long lines can be key to performing movements to look their most appealing.

Long lines can give the illusion that a dancer’s movements are ever expanding, and often this technique is what gives dancers that extra wow factor.

Here are our tips for creating longer lines:

  1. Use focus. Gaze further than your fingers, and extend tall through the spine to give the illusion of longer lines.
  2. Add volume. Varying your larger extending movements with smaller more inward movements makes it so that the long lines appear even more expansive.
  3. Work leg and ankle strength. When it comes to long lines of the legs, such as leg mounts and extensions, greater strength allows for more mobility. More mobility = being able to fully extend the leg and ankle straight.
  4. Use music. Sometimes lines and shapes can be cut off in movement when the dancer skips from movement to movement too quickly, never fully finishing those lines. Use all the music to its fullest extent and live in the moment of the song.
