Brain Health Benefits of Dance

Dance is proving to be more and more beneficial to the brain and brain health, according to recent studies.

According to Harvard, Dance has “such beneficial effects on the brain” that it is now being used to treat people with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological movement disorder.

The same article also mentions that the different centres of the brain are activated by the “planning, control and execution of voluntary movement” where all are required to work together to coordinate movement.

On top of this, some studies have shown how the “physical and expressive” elements of dance can alter brain function. These benefits range from memory improvement to improved neural connections.

A Bronx Aging Study followed 488 people aged 75 or older, for 21 years and found that dancing was associated with a lower risk of dementia.

Dance is such a beneficial activity for people to get involved with not just for improved physical fitness but also to keep good brain health.
