5 Unusual Ballet Facts

Ballet as a style has been practiced for hundreds of years, and has a rich history.

Here are five unusual facts about Ballet:

1. Ballet was created in the 1500s and is over 500 years old.

2. King Louis XIV of France was a ballet enthusiast and a patron of the arts. He even performed in some ballets himself.

3. In 2008 in Timișoara, a small town in Romania, police officers were legally required to take ballet lessons to assist them while directing traffic. This was to improve their efficiency of movement and precision.

4. The first tutu’s ever worn around the 1600s and 1700s were full-length dresses and gowns which were worn in royal courts. In the 1800s romantic tutus coming just below the knee were popularised, and eventually it was shortened above the knee.

5. Some professional ballerinas wear through a pair of pointe shoes each performance!
