5 Tips to Pick Up Dance Choreography Faster
Many dancers struggle with learning choreography and retaining it after class. However, all dancers can benefit from improving their ability to pick up choreography.
Being a quick learner not only allows you to learn faster, but also means you will have more class time to polish choreography and technical skills.
Tip #1: Remove distractions. Whether it’s mental clutter from things worrying you outside of dance, or friends chatting in class making it hard to focus on the teacher, do your best to stay focused on the task during class time.
Tip #2: Don’t only watch the choreographer! Have you ever felt confident dancing with the teacher, but when you look away from them, you lose it? Learn by watching but then practise the movement looking at yourself in the mirror. You have to let your body learn the movement.
Tip #3: Find what works for you best. For some, naming the movements might help, so if a step reminds you of a bouncing action for example, you can associate that movement with the word bouncing. Some people prefer asking lots of questions to the teacher. Some need to learn standing at the front of the class. Everyone is different.
We hope these tips have helped you to feel more confident about picking up choreography. Let us know how you are going on our Instagram and Facebook.
