4 Tips to Acheive Higher Jumps

With the Easter school holidays fast approaching, comes the perfect time to get practising our technical skills. In today’s post we will be sharing our tips for achieving higher jumps.

They’ll have you bouncing as high as the Easter bunny!

  1. Strength. Strength in the legs is needed for power in your jumps, which will ensure you are able to get height in jumps. Core strength is important for maintaining posture and alignment in the air.
  2. Use your plie. Lots of dancers who struggle with jumps may have plenty of leg strength for power, but are forgetting to bend their knees leading into their jumps.
  3. Control. It’s not only about the way it looks in the air – we need to control our landing too. The jump is not over until it is ALL the way over, meaning you have recovered and straightened your posture. Improving core strength is great for this too.
  4. Arms. It’s not all about the legs – our posture and arms make or break the fluidity of jumps from the viewer’s perspective. To make jumps look effortless, watch out for positioning of the arms, ensuring that they are in the correct position.

Executing difficult jumps can add an extra layer of difficulty and athleticism to performances, so it makes sense why many dancers are seeking to improve in this area. Plus, it’s a great feeling when we’re able to use our strength to pitch ourselves high in the air.

If you try out any of these tips, you’ll be sure to be hopping as high as the Easter Bunny. Tag us in your photos on Instagram or on Facebook at “Dance Factor”.
