3 Ways to Improve Musicality and Timing for Dancers
Musicality is a fundamental skill for all styles of dance – after all the timing and with which dancers move shows their unique visual expression of the sound of the music. And, for dance groups, musical timing and togetherness can make or break a dance routine.
Here are three tips to improve your musicality:
- Practice counting your song using counts of eight. Most songs can be counted in sets of eight and it is common for dancers to use this format. Find the beginning of the song’s chorus and go from there, counting each beat. Clapping is a great way to make each beat sound clear to the ears.
- Don’t get caught up going through the motions as you dance. Hold each count for the exact amount of time the song requires. Stay focused on specific sounds, rather than skipping ahead. Keep engaging with your eight-counts even when you’ve mastered the steps.
- Find your own way of understanding the music. This could mean creating your own key words to remember theparts of the music where certain movements must be executed. This could be saying ‘boom’ when there is a strong bass sound. Or attaching steps to key lyrics in the song.
