10 Good Habits for Dancers to Develop
Are you a dancer looking to improve and up-level your skills?
Building good habits is key to maintaining your progress in the long-term, which will ensure you can continue to sustain the skills you have learned for years to come.
- Ensure to practice movements in any spare time you get in class to make sure you are confident with all choreography later in class.
- Always ask permission to leave the room.
- Utilise spatial awareness by being conscious of the others in your class.
- When marking or practising the choreography make sure to do so in the back or where there is extra space.
- If you are sitting out of class make sure to use your time effectively. For example, practise stretches or strengthening exercises that won’t affect your injury.
- Maintain a warm up/cool down routine to prepare for class and help with recovery.
- Build on the strength you have developed in class at home by practising strength movements. Being stronger overall means that you may progress quicker in class.
- Practice muscle memory to learn new routines. Just marking your dances over and over at home in your bedroom will improve your muscle memory of your dances.
- Eat plenty of nourishing snacks to fuel your body throughout the day and ensure to drink water to stay hydrated. This habit will also aid in your recovery after dance.
- Set and stick to your goals. Only if you know exactly what you want to achieve will you be able to take the steps required to get there.
